Artificial Intelligence

The battle for AI is now over the physical world

Quite an auspicious start to the newsletter this week. This is a great clip about how the AI race is shifting away from digital artificial intelligence and moving towards a world where AI influences the physical structures and goods in our society where the real money is made.

Toys “R” Us brought to you by OpenAI’s Sora

Looks like OpenAI’s Sora is firing back at Luma’s Dream Machine by being a go to tool for big brands in the first ever Sora generated commercial by Toys “R” Us. Is this the beginning of an onslaught of AI generated video across the internet and TV? I wonder what the percentage of AI vs human generated content will be this time next year. We’ll have to wait and see!

Combining AI Tools

The time is coming for the synergy of artificial intelligence tool that enables never before seen workflows that significantly decrease the time to go from idea to execution.

This week we highlight this flow that uses MidJourney for 2D images, Luma Dream Machine for Video with animations, music from Udio and it all comes together on an Apple Vision Pro to watch the masterpiece you’ve put together.

The Metaverse and Spatial Computing

Apple plans to save the Vision Pro by potentially shifting focus from the headset itself to complementary products and features. This includes leveraging the device's capabilities in new ways, such as enhancing user experience through innovative software updates and integrations with other Apple products. By broadening the ecosystem and functionality of Vision Pro, Apple aims to boost its appeal and sales, countering initial slow adoption rates.

Mario Kart - but with Family guy!

One of the most interesting use cases for the Apple Vision Pro has come out and it’s basically Mario Kart with characters like Peter Griffin from Family Guy. The differentiator….you can drive with just hand tracking. I’d prefer to use a controller and don’t worry they support that too.

The iPhone mirroring feature that has been added to MacOS is DEFINITELY going to be extended to Vision Pro in the future. Just wait and see. This is their test. You will be able to emulate your physical phone as a digital device in the headset.

Niantic Studio Announcement

Niantic is a company to keep an eye on when it comes to spatial computing although they lean towards calling it augmented reality in lieu of Apple’s definition. I’ve built projects in ThreeJS before so it’s nice to see that framework of JS be used to further 3D development on such a large scale.

Even though there have been rumblings about the lack of success PSVR2 is seeing Sony is still pushing to stay even with Meta, Apple, HTC and others in the mixed reality race. There are a lot of different form factors that the next computing paradigm will take and Sony is working with creatives in mind delivering this standalone headset to rival products like the Quest 3.

Here is what ChatGPT 4o thinks of the article:

Sony's XR2 Gen 2 standalone headset is a significant advancement in VR technology. This new device offers enhanced features such as superior resolution, better performance, and improved user experience compared to its predecessors. The headset includes advanced tracking and high-quality visuals, making it a strong contender in the VR market. Sony aims to provide an immersive and seamless experience, further pushing the boundaries of virtual reality technology.

Overall we’ll have to see how the industry evolves and how successful these devices end up being. It’s crazy to think that such big name brands are pushing this industry forward now but it’s still uncertain when it will be a consumer hit.

VR Driving Tests - China is living in the future

Robotics

Here are some random updates that were shared in the realm of Robotics and Humanoid Robots. It’s fascinating to see the progress in this industry and it’s clear it’s only going to continue to accelerate.

Gaming

So this streamer plays video games with her mind… She wears a device that uses her thoughts to control her character and she was able to take on Elden Ring (a game that a lot of people can’t beat with a controller) and beat a boss with just the power of her mind from their latest release.

Energy

This one is a surprise. I always forget the Rolls-Royce does way more than build a few fancy cars every year. This could be quite a breakthrough if their micro-reactor can be used across a wide array of industries in order to serve an ever growing need for energy.

Cities of the Future

Humans continue to innovate on the environment they live in and this example in China is a testament to futuristic living. Coined “the mall of the future” it’s a sight to behold and I wish we had one on this side of the planet just like it.
